Honoring Our Community Leaders

Proudly Accepting The Marcy Adelman and Jeanette Gurevitch Founders’ Award:

TOM NOLAN

For his lifelong dedication to public service in housing and transportation for all.

When Tom was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1979, he was one of only a handful of LGBTQ+ elected officials in the country. He continued his passion for public service in many roles: the Executive Director of Project Open Hand, a position on the SFMTA Board of Directors, and eventually, the San Francisco Disability and Aging Services Department, where he lead projects serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community, including major support for Openhouse.

Proudly Accepting The Openhouse Trailblazer Award

JEWELLE GOMEZ

Jewelle Gomez is a lifelong advocate and artist in the Black and LGBTQ+ communities. She was a founding member of one of the first weekly Black television shows, Say Brother, wrote award winning Black lesbian fiction novels in The Gilda Stories, and writes original works as a playwright in residence at New Conservatory Theater Center in San Francisco. In addition, her philanthropy over the last 30 years includes being a founding member of GLAAD, serving as the president of the San Francisco Public Library Commission, and much more, including early support for Openhouse.

For her immense contributions to the arts as a playwright, author, and philanthropist.

Proudly Accepting The GenOUT Award:

MICHAEL JOHNSTONE

& DAVID FAULK

For their many artistic contributions to the Openhouse community, including our community space mural!

Michael Johnstone and David Faulk have spent more than 25 years celebrating the joy of creating. Creating costumes, creating a character in Mrs. Vera, and creating community in the Verasphere. These outrageous outfits inspire curiosity and creativity in all who have the pleasure of interacting with them in places like the San Francisco Pride Parade, and beyond. Not tethered to one medium, David painted a beautiful, original mural at our 75 Laguna community center as a tribute to HIV Long-Term Survivors, and embodying the heart and history of our community. David and Michael are the subjects of a 2022 feature length documentary, The Unabridged Mrs. Vera’s Daybook: A Feature Length Documentary by Robert James, about their art, survival, and long-term relationship.
